NEW CAPORAL LABEL FOR CELERY

by Warren Bendixen

The Caporal 4L (Prometryn) label will be expanded to cover application on pre-transplant celery as a result of five research trials I conducted on Betteravia Farms in cooperation with Craig Reade, Betteravia Farms, and Jake Zacaria, Novartia, during the spring and summer of 1997.

The 24C label expansion submitted by Novartis Crop Protection, Inc. is expected to clear around the middle of August.

The previous label for transplant celery restricted application to the 2-6 week-period after transplanting and before the weeds are 2 inches tall. Weeds frequently competed with the celery transplants during this delayed applications and required more handlabor to weed the fields.

The pre-transplant applications showed a high degree of crop safety and equal celery yields to the post-transplant applications.

Broadleaf weeds, including common lamb’s-quarters, nettleleaf goosefoot, redroot pigweed, malva, shepherd’s-purse, and small nettle were all effectively controlled with the pre-transplant applications equal to, or better, than the post-transplant applications.

The results of 3 of the 5 trials are shown in the following tables:
